WHISTLER, BC, Monday May 12, 2008 –The legendary Whistler Mountain Bike Park is set to open this Saturday, May 17, marking ten years of operation and progression in the world of lift-accessed downhill mountain biking.

Despite some challenges caused by deep snow-pack at the lower elevations and a cooler than normal spring the Whistler Mountain Bike Park will open with two of its most popular trails – A-Line and Crank It Up.

"A decided lack of warmth this spring and deep snow on the lower slopes has made trail clearing a challenge, but we are excited to be able to open the park on time thanks to a huge amount of work by our trail crew, patrol and machine operators,” says Brian Finestone, Bike Park Manager. “On May 10 we also had 30 volunteers come out to clear trails. These passionate riders were a huge help in getting us to opening day. It will be a blast to kick off our tenth season riding trails flanked by snow.”

Trail crews are digging through over 90 centimetres of snow on parts of the lower slopes to bring the trails out of hibernation.  Bobcats and staff with hand shovels are clearing snow in the tighter sections of the Bike Park. As temperatures rise and the trail crews continue their efforts, more and more trails will open for eager riders.

To top off opening day, the premiere of Kranked 7 "Cackle Factor,” will show at the Garibaldi Lift Company Saturday night, followed by live music by Shane Philip.

Since 1998, the Bike Park has built a reputation for delivering the world’s best lift-accessed mountain biking, establishing hallowed trails where the limits of both rider and equipment have been pushed.  Trails such as A-Line, often described as the most famous mountain bike trail in the world, have inspired legions of riders from all over the world to make their pilgrimage to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park for their fix of flow, air and stunts unrivalled by any bike park in the world.

Over the years the Whistler Mountain Bike Park has hosted many pro riders, been centre stage for a variety of festivals including Kokanee Crankworx and Red Bull Elevation, and has acted as the proving ground for new bike and equipment technology.  Starting with a few trails and one lift in 1998, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park has continued to open up new terrain, and access to the sport of mountain biking for every level of rider.  Today there are over 250 kilometres of trails accessed by a gondola and two high speed quads.

"I always dreamed about a mountain bike experience that could be just like skiing,” says Richie Schley, professional mountain biker and coach of Richie Schley Mountain Bike Camps. “Ten years later, it seems we are there. There are tons of jumps, stunts, and trails for all abilities - all accessible by lifts.  I can't wait to ride it all again this season.”

Bike Park Season Passes are available by phone at 1-800-766-0449, online at www.whistlerbike.com or in person at the Village Guest Relations in the Whistler Gondola building.  Bike Park passes are $449 with an Early Bird rate of $409 if you purchase before May 31, 2008.  Winter Edge Card and Season Pass holders are eligible to purchase a Bike Park pass for $399.

The Triple Play Card is also back, offering three days of riding in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park for $115 or the Early Bird price of $105, if you purchase before May 31.  Riders can save nearly 25 per cent off additional days in the park and can go directly to the lift by connecting their Triple Play Card to their credit card.

Claire's Updates: Champery World Cup
By: claire_buchar

The Champery World Cup track was the most challenging track I've raced on so far. It was very steep, very technical and very 'full on' top to bottom. I loved it. I have to admit, when I was walking the track before practice, I did sometimes think, "what the hell were they thinking!" It was that gnarly. I rode good throughout practice, took a couple crashes here and there, it was pretty much unavoidable but I felt pretty confident. People were dropping like flies out there! You had to be there to understand. The weather was summer in the beautiful Swiss Alps but each afternoon the threat of thunder showers would set in. By Saturday, it began to rain. Hard. The already challenging track got even harder to ride. It was the 'who could stay on their bike game' for the girls. Unfortunately, I was one of many that couldn't hold it together for the run that counted. I crashed and it was timely. I finished 13th and was a bit dissapointed in myself. But I learned a lot about my riding out there and am stoked about that. Props to the girls who ripped it and Sam Hill for basically blowing everyone away. Thanks for your support everyone. Off to ride in more mud!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Friday, June 1st, 2007

Panorama Mountain Village, B.C. – The Mad Trapper Mountain Bike Downhill returns to Panorama on June the 24th and this year’s event will be faster than ever thanks to a new race trail.

The Mad Trapper has been held on Insanity for the past few years, a trail known for its gnarly, technical sections. This year’s race will be much faster, as course designer, Darcy Lehr, has decided to switch things up. The new course will run on Lookout, an A-line style trail with tight, twisty segments. “The final bottom section will be super fast and flowy in contrast to the last few years,” explains Lehr. “It will give fit racers an advantage, so if you haven’t been endurance training, you’d better get started.”

Panorama opens for the mountain bike season on Friday, June the 22nd, with the Mile 1 Quad operating between 10:00am to 5:00pm Sunday to Friday, and until 8:00pm on Saturday’s.

The Mad Trapper race isn’t the only thing happening at Panorama on opening weekend. Bikers can test ride the latest Kona Mountain Bikes, check out the re-shaped table top jumps on Hell’s Bells, or ride the brand-new machine groomed trail, Let It Ride, a 3.2km bermed cruiser.

One of Southern California's largest mountain-biking festivals, the eighth-annual Firestone Santa Ynez Valley Mountain-Bike Classic will be held April 27-29, 2007. The event, which features downhill, cross-country and an endurance cross-country race, is sponsored by Platinum Performance nutrition and is held at the Firestone Vinyard outside of Buelton, California.

The event has evolved into a true "must do" for nearly every Central Coast based mountain biker, and last year's race drew over 900 racers and 2000 spectators, attracting racers from as far away as New York City and New Zealand.

With the event scheduled two weeks after the Sea Otter Classic and one week before the National Mountain-Bike Series race in Fontana, California, Race Organizer Mike Hecker hopes for an increased turnout of professional riders.

"I think with the increased pro purse we're going to get better pro turnout," Hecker said. "I think it's going to enhance our spectator numbers and will grow the sport. It gives pros a way to source out their livelihood."

NISSAN ANNOUNCES:
 QASHQAI URBAN CHALLENGE
SERIES 1

First ever pan-European event series in free-riding - five countries, over five weekends, five disciplines

200,000 euros - highest prize money in the sport of mountain biking

First international broadcast of the sport

TRAPPES, France (March 20, 2007) - As part of its European launch of the new ‘urbanproof’ crossover QASHQAI, Nissan announces the QASHQAI Urban Challenge - the first ever pan-European free-riding competition of its kind.

QASHQAI Urban Challenge is an urban free-riding competition where the world's best mountain bikers will compete in an urban environment to win 200,000 euros - the largest prize fund in this sport to date. Throughout May and June, five European cities will host each leg of the first series bringing together the best of the free-riding world as well as the uninitiated in each city where spectators can see the sport pushed to its limits.

The first series of QASHQAI Urban Challenge, which will be broadcast for the first time internationally, will take place in UK, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.  In each country, contestants will encounter different challenges based on the topography of the city and will use different disciplines to overcome these: Dirt, North Shore, Park, Big Air and Street Trials.  All five of the disciplines will be stimulating to watch and relate more to moto-x or trails riding than common perceptions of mountain biking.

Urban free-riding is the most progressive discipline in mountain biking and illustrates the changing trend of focus from open woodland areas into urban city centres.
Nissan is the only non-sport related brand pioneering the ascent of urban free-riding and is looking forward to seeing how the riders respond to the challenge.

“The Urban free-rider epitomises the spirit of our new QASHQAI. They both enjoy the thrill of a challenge and overcoming the everyday obstacles encountered in an urban environment. It’s this joint pleasure of playing with the city that has led Nissan to challenge these professional riders to prove that they are as ‘urbanproof’ as our QASHQAI,” explains Paul Willcox, vice president of marketing at Nissan Europe.

A fully interactive website www.nissan-QASHQAIchallenge.com will provide feature details of the riders, the locations, the disciplines, event schedule and behind-the-scenes updates as the tour progresses.

Newcastle, UK: May 4/5 North Shore
Milan, Italy: May 11/12 Dirt

Camp of Champions, home to the largest private snowboard park in the world, is pleased to announce the creation of “PRO CAMP”. Finally, a camp for budding pro riders! A camp for riders who don’t need coaching but who still need access to the sickest terrain available in summer.

Designing and creating Pro Camp, we wanted to make a camp as bare bones as possible so that “budgetarily constrained” campers can come to Whistler and ride the only winter quality park available in the summer. The COC Park is at least twice the size of any summer park in Mt. Hood or Whistler and the town of Whistler is a snowboarder’s paradise with lakes, a skate park, restaurants and a movie theater.

The only way to make Pro Camp possible was to strip out almost everything except access to the epic park. At Pro Camp, campers have to be responsible for themselves. We supply the bare bones: lift tickets, a tasty lunch, and our world-famous park. The camper is responsible for arranging everything else. If you are 18 or over and want to go pro, start by hitting campofchampions.com and see how you can go to camp for $700 Cdn (approx $575.00 US) for an eight day session - 1/3 of the price of a regular snowboard camp. Log on now, go pro sooner!

Pro Camp is eligible for the $500 Child Fitness Tax Credit. Come to camp, submit your camp receipt with your taxes and get a $500 tax credit from the Canadian Government for getting off the couch. You must be Canadian to qualify for the tax credit.

For the best discount accommodation we recommend Whistler Blackcomb Staff Housing. Live in Whistler this summer for less than $10 a night.
