MOUNTAIN bikes could become as familiar a sight as snowboards at Scotland's ski centres as a lack of snow forces them to diversify to stay in business.

Bike tracks are to be built down the pistes at Glenshee, following the lead of the Nevis Range and Glencoe resorts.

The Glenshee decision follows its worst season since the 1980s; the mildest conditions in recent memory forced the centre to close as early as 25 March.

Climate experts have already warned that downhill skiing in Scotland could come to an end within a generation.

The Glenshee centre, south of Braemar, boasts the country's most extensive ski area, with 21 lifts and 36 runs. It was once even described as Scotland's answer to France's Three Valleys resort in Meribel.

However, this winter it managed only 34 "decidedly average" skiing days - just a third of the annual average.

Contractors are now carving a mountain bike track into the hillside in an effort to diversify and offer thrill-seekers an alternative to snow sports.

Stewart Davidson, a director of the Glenshee Ski Centre, said: "The idea is to move forward with the mountain biking, and we hope to have it up and running for next summer.

"The bikers will be able to use the chairlifts to get them to the top of the hill and then race down. It will be a great facility for us when it's finished. We need to diversify; there's no way we can rely on our winters."

Mr Davidson said the season had been the worst for at least 16 years. "The weather has been unbelievable. It's been unseasonally mild and we've just not had the snow," he said.
"As for next winter, it's a case of wait and see what it brings. It is incredibly difficult to sustain 30-odd days of skiing a year. We have staff to pay, insurance, rights and everything else. The costs don't go down just because our number of days' skiing goes down. The future of skiing in Scotland, not just at Glenshee, is in very grave danger of being wiped out altogether."

The Nevis Range, near Fort William, will host the mountain bike world championships in September after hosting the world cup for five years. The centre hopes the event will attract 40,000 people and boost the local economy by £2 million - more than twice the total for last year's world cup.

A spokeswoman said the 2,000ft-descent bike track produced significant income and it planned to build a second.

Glencoe Mountain Resort's mountain bike track opens early next month. David Campbell, the company secretary, said he hoped it would help offset lower winter income from skiing.

Floyd Landis to Compete at Teva Mountain Games in Vail, June 2-3

Just eight months after undergoing major hip surgery, 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis has accepted an invitation to compete in the Teva Mountain Games presented by Volkswagen(R), June 2-3. Organizers announced today that Landis will compete as a member of Team Athletes for a Cure in the GNC(R) Ultimate Mountain Challenge, a two-day competition consisting of four separate races -- road biking, kayaking, trail running and mountain biking.

Landis will join a team that includes world-class kayaker Tao Berman and accomplished trail runner Simon Gutierrez, to raise money for prostate cancer research through Athletes for a Cure, a program of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

"I am honored to be invited to take part in the Teva Mountain Games for such an important cause," remarks Landis. "I am excited to put my new hip to the test racing in the Rockies and this is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation at the same time."

The GNC Ultimate Mountain Challenge will test pro and amateur athletes in four demanding competitions over two days. The event consists of the Nature Valley(R) Mountain Bike Cross Country Championship race and the Downriver Kayak Sprint on Saturday, June 2. On Sunday, the Challenge will continue with the Cytomax(R) 10K Trail Running Championship and the Trek(R) Road Bike Hill Climb. The individuals and the teams with the best combined results after the four events will be crowned the ultimate mountain man, woman and team.

Landis will compete in the Trek(R) Road Bike Hill Climb, a time-trial that travels over nine miles up Vail Pass and gains more than 1,400 feet in elevation and the Nature Valley(R) Mountain Bike Cross Country Championship, a classic Colorado singletrack race. Landis' results in the two cycling races will be combined with Berman's in the kayak race and Gutierrez's in the trail run.

Vail, Colorado - Now in its sixth year, the Mountain Games May 30 - June 3 features 20 different amateur and professional organic action sports competitions
including...

mountain biking...

This year the Teva Mountain Games brings cross-country riders and the new generation of freeriders together for a weekend of great competition.

Vail has a long legacy of hosting world-class cycling competitions dating back to the Coors Classic/Red Zinger races of the early eighties, then as the host site for the World Mountain Biking Championships in '94 and '01.

freeride challenge...

The sport of mountain biking has changed dramatically over past few years as bikes get more and more suspension, and riders continue to push the envelopes of speed and airtime. The Mountain Games has embraced the new freedom of mountain biking and the Freeride Challenge will be the proving ground.

The Freeride Challenge will feature full-on, head-to-head races, but instead of the discipline-specific trials courses of yesteryear, the Freeride Challenge will include difficult but doable jumps, ramps and other obstacles. Riders can choose to enter on a big, DH-style bike, go fast and light on a BMX bike, or ride something in between.

For the spectators, mark this down on the don't-miss events sheet. It's been a crowd favorite over the years with bikers 8 feet in the air, on top of a structure that's only 2 feet wide.

freeride big air competition...

Over the past 5 years mountain biking has undergone a serious transformation. Gone are the days when mountain bikers were known solely for the neon spandex they wore.
Today, freeriders challenge the laws of gravity as they throw 360s and backflips over terrain most wouldn’t even walk down. Check out these world-class riders as they "step it up" on the streets of Vail.

cross country nature valley® mountain bike championship...

New classic course, feed zone, spectator friendly, seperate race times for amateurs and pros, bigger cash purse ($17,000 split between pros and semi pros)...the list goes on and on.

With current and former professional racers working closly with event producers to design this year's race, this is sure to be the most exciting race of the season.

Colonies.com Network Wide News: New Pollution
By: Colonies.com

Many young riders today aren’t simply imitating their heroes, they’re often the ones evolving their sport the most – leaving the established pros to catch up or pack up.  These kids are what New Pollution is all about.

Each half-hour episode will feature 3 of the best young athletes from across the core action sports realm: surf, snow, skate, bmx, fmx, and wake.  Since the age range of our riders is 16 and under, they might not always be old enough to drive a car, but they can probably air over one.

Hosted by professional surfer Matt Beacham, New Pollution will bring viewers into the world of these amazing athletes.  Do they go to school like most kids, or are they home-schooled?  How did they get so good at such a young age?  How do they (and their parents) deal with broken bones?  With contests 8 hours away?  With traveling around the country, and sometimes the world, before their voice cracks?  What music do they listen to?  What movies do the like?  What websites do they visit everyday?  Viewers will find out as we give them a slice of life from these young riders’ lives… not to mention action footage that will blow more than a few minds.

New Pollution begins airing December 31st, with a new episode coming each Sunday for 13 weeks.

The top action sports performances of the year will be honored at the inaugural Arby’s® Action Sports Awards presented by FUEL TV, airing nationally on FOX, Sunday, December 10. The ceremony will bring together the biggest names in skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, BMX, freestyle motocross and more along with dozens of celebrities from across the entertainment spectrum for one star-studded, high-flying show!

FMX star Travis Pastrana received four nominations following his double backflip performance at this summer’s X Games. Jamie Bestwick, one of the top BMX vert riders in the world, also received four nominations. Shaun White is up for three awards coming off his Olympic Gold Medal and Winter X Games Gold Medal snowboard runs. Lindsey Jacobellis contends for Female Snowboarder of the Year with fellow Olympians Hannah Teter and Gretchen Bleiler. The competition continues out of the water for surfers Andy and Bruce Irons, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Sofia Mulanovich, Rochelle Ballard and Chelsea Georgeson, among other top pros.

“Being nominated for one award would be special, but four awards is truly unbelievable,” said Pastrana. “I’ve had just an amazing year and to be recognized by the industry is an honor.”

Winners will be determined by the combination of fan balloting and a panel of expert judges, then announced during taped ceremonies on November 30. FOX will air the show nationally on December 10, at 2:30 PM ET/PT or 4:30 PM ET/PT either preceding or following local NFL coverage that afternoon (check local listings). "FOX Sports is happy to be working in conjunction with our brethren at FUEL to bring the Arby's Action Sports Awards to the entire country," said FOX Sports President Ed Goren. "Action sports are growing in popularity every year, and this show highlights the best of the best."

The Arby’s Action Sports Awards is produced by Future Mainstream Productions and the award-winning team of Bob Bain and Mike Burg, veterans of such events as the "Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards" and the "Teen Choice Awards." FUEL TV is supporting the event with its signature red carpet series "Blue Carpet Special," a special preview show premiering November 6, and will re-telecast the Arby’s Action Sports Awards throughout December.

"The growth and popularity of action sports is at an all-time high and it is time to honor such amazing feats as Shaun White’s Olympic Gold Medal and Travis Pastrana’s double backflip at the X Games," said Bain. "Not only do children aspire to be the next Pastrana or White, but the music and entertainment industries have a true affinity for these sports, so we look forward to putting together a memorable event for viewers."

Arby’s has signed on to be the presenting sponsor and other major sponsors include Jeep®, Activision and Nike. "Through this event, we’ve been able to create an unprecedented integrated marketing platform to reach the highly sought-after male 14-34 demo in the fourth quarter," said Burg. "For a creative and aggressive marketer, the opportunities to work with the show are endless"

"This was a fantastic opportunity for us to partner with a brand new awards program that recognizes young athletes for extraordinary talents," said Debra Mager, Senior Vice President of National Advertising, Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc. "These kids take risks and excel at being different, which is something we at Arby’s have always prided ourselves on."

A panel of industry experts nominated the top athletes in 20 different categories. Many of the awards are sport and gender specific such as Skateboarder of the Year (male and female) and FMX Rider of the Year. Achievements that transcend the genre have been nominated in categories such as Rider of the Year, Huevos Grande and Performance of the Year.

PRESS RELEASE

Munich_Airdrome…front_small.jpg

Super Cross over Munich presents the Airdrome, Dirt Jump Invitational

When the first snow is falling over Munich and the whole city is busy with preparing for Christmas, the 3rd weekend in advent will be far from peaceful: the Munich Airdrome is going to happen for the first time on December 15th. The event will take place in connection with the “Super Cross Over Munich” weekend. For the last time this year, the world beating dirt jumpers will show their abilities. There can be no talk of winter sleep when Cam McCaul or Jamie Goldman flies over the huge dirt jumps in Munich’s Olympic Hall.

“Super Cross Over Munich” takes place in the Bavarian metropol for the 8th time this year since 1999. And its success can definitely not be concealed. Last year, during the whole weekend 20,000 spectators came to the Olympic Hall – a location which usually hosts famous music bands. Having focused on disciplines such as Super Cross and FMX during the previous years, there will be an additional mountainbike dirt jump contest for the first time this winter. It shows that the organisers of the event have realised the increasing importance and interest in mountainbike sports. Besides motocross riders like Mike Metzler or Ronnie Renner, the 15 world best dirt jumpers are prepared to start at the opening of the event on Friday evening, December 15th.

Invited riders for this premiere-event are:

Cameron McCaul (USA)
Jamie Goldman (USA)
Paul Basagoitia (USA)
Carlo Dieckmann (GER)
Timo Pritzel (GER)
Lance McDermott (UK)
Grant Fielder (UK)
Trond Hansen (NOR)
Lluis Lacondeguy (ESP)
Andreu Lacondeguy (ESP)
Kyle Strait (USA)
Ben Boyko (CAN)
Darren Berrecloth (CAN)
Darren Pokoj (AUS)
Greg Watts (USA)

The course consists of a step down at the beginning, followed by some massive dirt jumps which stand 3-4 metres high and the guys will take home 10,000 Euros in total as a Pre-Christmas gift.

You should not let the chance slip to visit this unique event. Since the run was extremely big on Friday night last year, you should not miss the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance.

Advance bookings are possible on www.supercrossover.com or by phone: +49 1805 / 999 005 (12c/min.)

Be there when the dirt jump pros show their – maybe most extreme – tricks at the Airdrome. One thing is for sure: Airtime will be shown to the limits of possibility in Munich: Be there or be square!

For anyone reading, a reminder that I teach snowboarding (skiing too, but prefer the boarding). In the PSIA/AASI forum, I had written kind of a summary. Anyways, here is my input (part 1) between the two sports:

The third week of June 2006 was the best week of my life! Went from being the instructor all winter to being the student. I saved up and for my vacation I went to wakeboard camp http://wakeboardingcamp.com

From the couple of tries at wakeboarding in 2005, as compared to what I learned by trained instructors at camp - well, there is no comparison. Before, I could get up, carve some, through trial and error taught myself surface 180's and could ride switch which came from the snowboarding experience, but beyond that I was more or less clueless on the physics and effective ways to wakeboard.

The liquidifed version of boarding certainly has many similarities to snowboarding. The way we use camber to pressure the board and make certain movements such as in ollies, seems to similarly equivalate "rocker" on the board, with different rocker designs affecting pop and IMO, a "reverse" type of pressure distributing used when getting pop off the wake. Edging and using basic flexion and extension and general riding seems to mimic "powder riding". What really stood out for me as a snow instructor and now more engrained into my brain come winter time was the relationship of how the upper body movement's affect the performance down below. With the wakeboard, a bad habit I'm glad I broke early was the "breaking at the waist" (arms way out and board one direction and rear end sticking way out- a bad riding habit I've personally worked on breaking before in the snow.) Ollies still are not one of my stronger riding points, but do carry very similar movements as the snowboarding does.

Another thing I didn't realize prior but do now; when self-teaching myself on the water, I figured to keep the nose of a wakeboard up, just pressure that rear leg and walla -- now I see and feel the difference, much like snowboarding, tail weighting that board is going to create less effective movements and slower response. Distributing the weight equally (or close to) on the wakeboard is best. The rocker is going to help with keeping that nose from digging in too much.

Traditionally, at least based on my obsevations, wakeboards had dual center fins on either end. I had the opportunity to demo a couple of boards and this year a four fin model (with NO center fins) - the "Hyperlite Drive". One of these days when I get a digital camera to replace the old broken one, I'll have to take pictures of my favorite summer toy.  Now if I just had the money for a boat so I didn't always have to mooch pulls.

Sam Hill of the Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz Racing team couldn’t have picked a better North American event to shine in, this past weekend taking 1st place overall in the men’s pro-elite category in the Garbanzo Enduro Dowhnill at Whistler’s (B.C.) Crankworx Festival, co-sponsored by Monster Energy.

“Coming into the weekend I was just hoping to maybe get on the podium, but even then I wasn’t sure if I could do that,” said Hill, who’d never raced the Garbanzo Enduro – which snakes through a sometimes fast, sometimes highly technical 1,300 vertical feet up in Whistler, British Columbia. “It was excellent to not only win, but win in front of a great crowd at an event sponsored by Monster Energy.”

Hill continued: “And I’d definitely like to thank Monster Energy’s Joe Parsons, who picked up the tab on that steak dinner the night before the race!”

Hill took to the course with some 250 other competitors on Saturday morning and got a couple practice runs in on the dew-covered course. By the afternoon the course had quickly morphed from wet to dry and dusty. Drawing plate No. 7, and with the field running in an inverse order, by the time Hill got to run the course was battered.

“The course got pretty beat before I even started my run, but my ’07 Iron Horse ran flawlessly and I was able to pull off the win. It was definitely one of the hardest races I’ve ever done,” said Hill.

A number of the sections on the highly technical track took their toll on the riders. In fact, Hill and current UCI World Cup points leader Steve Peat both went down on the same wooded bridge, although Hill was able to right himself, gather his faculties and eventually beat Peat by three seconds (15:14.0 to 15:17.0). Rounding out the podium was fellow Australian Chris Kovarik (15:17.6). Noteworthy: A typical UCI World Cup downhill event is 3-5 minutes, making the 15-plus minute Garbanzo Downhill that much more burly!

“I definitely want to thank Team Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz Racing and Sam Hill for doing such a gnarly race and helping out this event – it was a great success,” said Joe Parsons, Senior Sports Marketing Manager for Monster Energy. Noteworthy: The Monster Energy Sample Team gave out more than 28,000 cans of Monster Original, Monster Lo-Carb, Monster Assault and Monster Khaos during the week-long event!

Sam Hill and the Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz Racing team – including Sabrina Jonnier and Justin Havukainen - return to action this weekend (Aug. 5-6) for the Round Six of the NORBA National Mt. Bike Series at Brian Head, Utah. The following weekend the series wraps up in Snowmass, Colo. (Aug. 12-13). Havukainen is currently 3rd overall in the men’s division points, Hill is 5th (having raced only a partial schedule). This should favor Hill as the racers are allowed to take the best five-of-seven scores from the seven-race series and Hill plans on finishing out the last two events.

“Both Sam and Justin have the Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz Racing team in a position to make the overall podium at Nationals this year,” said Sean Heimdal, Team Manager for Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz Racing. “And Sabrina is in sixth place overall in the women’s class, having only made three of the first five events. So she’s in a position as well to make the overall Nationals podium.”
