URIEDOG's ramblings: We're back!
By: URIEDOG

After a long hiatus, we're back! Actually not really hiatus we were still building bikes, just a bit of a slow down on it.  I have started updating our website and we have some smoooth frame design changes as well!

I have been riding a new design Ronin for a year now and man it is our best DH hard tail frame yet. We have also been getting great feedback on our 24" specific ST frame, built with park riding in mind its fast, short, and nimble!

anyway. I can't seem to upload pictures, hopfully I get some up in the next few days.

Later, I'm off to Fernie for the long weekend

Working for a pre-hospital EMS service has certain details that are undisclosed in your contract. It has a tendacy to make you hard in some aspects. I can see someones arm completely stripped to the bone and not blink an eye (happend a few weeks ago), or see someones intestines hanging out of them then turn around and eat a hearty dinner. But some things you see just on the street out of pure innocence, and you become an emotional niusance. Bathing in tears and hiding in a dark room.

I had an instance like this just two days ago. I was on call and running errands on my bicycle. A gentleman was walking towards me on the sidewalk that saw me and waved. I broke down. Sounds ridiculous right? This gentleman was just not the ordinary guy. He had an obvious physical handicap, which turns out to be a soft spot for me. He was so excited to see me riding my bike. The expression on his face as he watched me ride by was one in a billion. I had to ride an additional mile or two to regain my composure before walking into any businesses.

Why does this effect me do you ask? I feel guilty. People who share handicaps don't have the luxury we do. He has probably never sat on and pedaled a bicycle. He will never get to experience the joys of carving through the snow on a foot of fresh powder. Never get to scale an 80 foot rock face in the Canyonlands. Its these instances that break me down and leave me hanging out to dry. Being an EMT and Firefighter gives me an opportunity to help these folks, but not to the extent I would like. I would love to make all these things we take for granted a reality for the handicapped. Its very hard though living in a small community. I make my efforts, but are quickly shut down due to lack of money and personel.

I guess one day things will happen. But until then I guess I have to run, whenever encountered, to keep my composure and show strength as a public figure.

URIEDOG's ramblings: Big Chinook
By: URIEDOG

Wow its been a long time since I have posted here.

In Calgary we get these crazy weather swings called Chinook's. the temperature can swing from -20 to +10 in a couple hours. There is a long one going now. Its been a week of warm weather. So today I got one the bike and went out for a ride. Felt awesome!!.  Although in a couple days it'll be winter again. Oh well it'll be summer soon enough.

Next thing. having a little trouble with our website. Everything works, pictures, store ect.. just can't update our home page (working on it) But I am sure we'll be back in order soon enough.

Just got home from the shop, here is a pick from the latest frame build. A custom 24" specific street/park frame for a local Calgary rider. This is only the rear triangle. I'll start putting the front on later this week. I like to see all the welds, and burn marks. So this frame will only get a clear coat to protect it from rusting. RAW finish is my favorite.

Well time to go pack up. snowboarding tomorrow!

later

so mike and i are officially in ontario. and how. we got to drive the whole way (well, mike drove while i took pictures and sang), only got lost four times (two of which i still maintain were not our fault!), never ran out of gas, and still made it to ontario in time for thanksgiving.

we started it all off with the def leppard and styx concert in vancouver. it was everything i'd built it up to be, complete with middle-aged groupies and lighters waving in time with music. both bands actually put on a surprisingly good show, and although there's nothing better than watching a band perform in the prime of their lives, watching them perform throughout middle age is one of a kind.

our next stop was whistler, where mo was kind enough to throw us a goodbye party. it was awesome to see everyone, and thanks to all who came out. wish we could have stayed longer, but as always, it was onwards and forwards the next day. we had a long drive through to calgary. went the wrong way on the reserve north of pemberton, and again in lilloet. but we were pretty good at correcting ourselves, and didn't go too far out of our way! in lilloet we stopped at the tourist info centre, which doubled as a hunting museum. it was a little eerie asking directions under the glassy-eyed stares of the counter girl and multiple elk, bighorn sheep, deer, and moose heads.

we got through the rockies while it was still light out, and the views made it all worthwhile. the highway we were on was in desperate need of repairs for the most part... in fact, just outside kamloops we actually got caught in construction! not that we really minded, i mean, toyota paseos are built for offroading right?? well, mike thought so anyways. it wasn't until we went over the railroad in alberta that my poor little car got its first taste of flight.

SSL20174.jpg Rockies, BC picture by tombuk

we finally chugged into calgary, having made surprisingly good time after all. something about men drivers and stuff... anyways, we had talked to kyle and he was willing to put us up for a couple nights in exchange for my questionable talents as a model and makeup artist. so, with misplaced faith in googlemaps, we turned left where we should have turned right (the map said slight left! so really, we were following directions perfectly!), and got lost in hidden valley. the thing with calgary is, every little section uses derivations of the same name to demarcate itself from the rest of the town. so we were faced with the choices of hidden valley road, hidden valley crescent, hidden valley heights, hidden valley close, and so on and so on. for how easily we found it, it damn sure wasn't hidden well enough! in the dark, we trundled back and forth until mike said "oh, i think this looks familiar... let's go this way..." and suddenly we were on the map again. whew! i think we were both quite relieved when we found the address we thought was right, and kyle answered the door, instead of some irate old lady in a housecoat. or worse, a happy old man asking if we liked popsicles.

SSL20103.jpg Lake in BC picture by tombuk

the next day, kyle graciously showed us around calgary, and the weather cooperated (there were a lot of clouds in BC), so we had a fun day. we'd booked the photo shoot for 5, and after two hours of having my hair pulled out by the roots, i was able to slap on some makeup and get the real photos started! apparently my hairdo was worth $300 or so... it looked fantastic, but my only masochistic tendencies involve ink and needles, so i was rather happy that my $300 wasn't necessary, and i can put it to much better use! as for the shoot itself, you'll all just have to wait for the calendar to see the fruits of our labours!

SSL20210.jpg Rockies and Fields in Alberta picture by tombuk

the next morning we were off to drumheller, to look at dinosaurs. mike was making every dinosaur joke under the sun (and then some...), which i didn't find very amusing after the first five minutes, let alone the next three hours... but the museum made up for my frustration! i felt a lot better once we got inside, because bones don't talk, and they definitely don't make jokes about "ooh, dinosaur crossing! we have to be careful not to hit one, or they might go extinct again!" once we'd had all the dinosaur bones we could take, we went off to find our hotel. mike was pretty excited when he saw a hotel advertising "WATERSLIDES!!"

SSL20235.jpg Badlands, AB picture by tombuk

and so we stayed with the waterslides. mike had way too much fun with that... he would go up the stairs, and throw himself into the slide, emerging at the bottom giggling like a little schoolgirl, having almost cracked his skull open on the opposite side of the pool. i went once, but really didn't get the magicalness of it. oh well. we were joined in the pool by an older, rather large man, and seeing mike having such fun, he decided he just had to try it too. i was scared he was going to get stuck, but no, he made it through fine and plopped into the water, also giggling like a little schoolgirl. must be a guy thing.

SSL20254a.jpg Mike in Horseshoe Canyon, AB picture by tombuk

the next morning we stopped off to visit the largest t-rex ever, which for a minimal fee, we could have climbed up to look out over the town of drumheller. we adopted the "lets not and say we did" philosophy, and took a couple pictures to satisfy our inner tourist, and hopped in the car, heading off to saskatoon.

SSL20280.jpg Mike fighting a Trex, Drumheller, AB picture by tombuk

we'd planned to stop in tramping lake along the way, where my grandmother was born. our directions (again, google maps), specifically told us to go left on highway 21. we found highway 31, and thought "oh, it will be soon!". miles of fields and a few dirt roads later, we found ourselves at highway 4. shi*t. we'd gone too far. but we hadn't seen a single sign indicating which dirt road was highway 21. so we doubled back a bit, trying to find a street sign, any street sign, which would tell us where the hell highway 21 was. or highway 656, that would've worked too. we knew we were supposed to be driving over a lake, and when we drove over a ... pond ... mike said "that might have been it!" he nearly had me convinced, when we passed over another, larger pond. "oh, i bet that was it" he said. after the third "lake" we crossed, i stopped listening to him.

SSL20313.jpg Grain Silos in AB picture by tombuk

we never did find it, and eventually admitted defeat, continuing on to saskatoon. i guess finding a community of 20 people is a little more difficult than it should be.

SSL20305.jpg Hay Bales in AB picture by tombuk

the next day was saskatoon to winnipeg. a lot of people will say the prairies are boring. i agree. sort of. growing up on an island in the pacific ocean, i definitely didn't have much exposure to rolling fields of grain, so i found it interesting. there was always something to look at, and a lot of ramshackle old barns and sheds, which i quite like. winnipeg turned out to be quite the treat, believe it or not.

SSL20387.jpg Derelict barn in AB picture by tombuk

we decided to stay at the holiday inn, since i was paying, or so mike says. when we checked in, we were offered a suite, a fancy room, or a kids room. being cheap, we went for the kids room, and man did we ever make the right choice! as soon as we got on the elevator, mike was already getting giddy, talking to the fish in their aquarium. as soon as the door opened, the first thing we saw was a pirate mural. mike started giggling. we stepped out and looked to our right, where there was a huge jungle gym with another pirate walking the plank. mike giggled some more. we walked down to our room, and there was a treasure chest on our door. mike ... well, you probably have a good idea by now what he was doing!

cross-canada235.jpg Our Pirate room in Winnipeg, MB picture by tombuk

in essence, a kids room is a glorified playpen. inside our room there was a queen bed (supposedly for the parents), and a whole separate room for the kids, complete with bunkbeds and more pirate murals! the kids also had their own TV and PS2, which we did not use becuase we spent too much time in the 'play room' right outside our window. we played foosball, went swimming in the kiddie pool, and got attacked by a shark named jeffrey (his mother was quite content to let him chase us around the pool). as usual, onwards and forwards the next day, we pushed into the dreaded ontario, and saw one of our only sunsets on the trip (lots of clouds).

SSL20646.jpg Sunset in Ontario picture by tombuk

thunder bay to sault ste marie the next day, we really wanted a hotel with a pool, so we asked around, and since the best western (mike REALLY wanted to enjoy its waterslide, unfortunate for him) was playing host to three tour buses, we opted for the quiter option, which turned out to be not all that quiet in the end anyways. we did get to enjoy a thunderstorm that night though, which i found pretty exciting!

SSL20668.jpg Kakabeka Falls picture by tombuk

ontario was where we finally decided to get out of the car at real rest stops, not just pulling onto the shoulder for thirty seconds of waving cameras around. i figured since i'm going to have to live here, i might as well make it worth my while!

SSL20770.jpg Lakeshore in Ontario picture by tombuk

the thunderstorm followed us all the way home the next day, and i was a bit scared that the power would go out right at the end of the canucks game, but it managed to hold together and i got to watch the canucks win in overtime, so at least my first night as a resident of dundas was exciting!!!

SSL20717.jpg Our trip, Terry Fox Memorial Viewpoint, ON picture by tombuk

and now i realise i've written way too much, as usual. oh well, i guess that happens! mike and i have been settling in (or back in, in his case). it's been a whirlwind, but i think things are finally starting to settle down. our internet is finally up, which means i can actually start applying for jobs. yay! hope everyone is well and you guys didn't miss us too much!

Interview with Fionn Griffiths World Cup DH & 4X Racer taking time out of her busy schedule after her 4th place finish at the Lisbon Downtown event.

  1.       How do you feel about your performance at the Lisbon Downtown? "I was fairly happy with my performance. I was having a really good race run and I had been riding well all weekend so it was unfortunate that my front end slid out in my race run. Just trying to keep the bike upright in Lisbon is a challenge in itself. The street are all marble and cobblestone so it is super slippy on every turn and every stair set. I wouldn't have ridden any differently. You can't afford to ease up anywhere on that track or else you lose too much time. They put more jumps in this year, which for me is great! I hit them all first run before any of the other girls had a chance to psyche me out :)"

2.       How do you prepare for a race? "I have been playing with a few new pre race ideas including pre race meditation, full scale warm ups on a wind trainer and sprint drills. In Vigo none of this was working for me though. It just seemed to leave me too much opportunity to think about things and get nervous before the race. So after a nervous qualifying run which resulted in 2 crashes, I decided to try some new stuff and turn up last minute to the start gate. It seemed to work well for me there. So I am still working on this stuff!"

3.       What's your training schedule? "That is top secret! I have hired a new trainer - Elke Brutsaert - and she has a whole pile of exercises to keep me entertained in the off season! Mainly loads of explosive plyometric drills and plenty of time on the road/street bikes. We have been focussing on core a fair bit as well.

 4.       What kind of bike do you ride? "I race a Norco Team DH and a Norco 4XXXX. If you haven't tried them out, you should! They are pretty cool. I worked closely with Norco the last couple of years to get the two bikes to where they are at and I love every second I spend riding them!"

 5.       Who are your sponsors? "Norco Performance Bikes, Kenda Tires, Zeal Optics, Shimano, Fly Racing (Kit), Foes/Curnutt Suspension, THE Helmets, MRP, Hope Brakes/Hubs, DT Swiss rims, Rich Art Concepts (Custom Helmet Design)."

6.       How many countries has your pro riding career brought you to? "Ummm...I have not been keeping count! That is a really good question. This year alone I will visit about 15 different countries! I have been to some pretty cool ones racing though - Brazil, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Australia."

7.       What was the first race you ever won? "I actually won the 1st race I ever entered. It was a Midland Super Series at Hawkston Park in Shropshire,UK. Winning that was what really pushed me to keep racing."

8.       How old were you when you first started riding? Racing? "I always kind of kicked around on my bike and rode a bit, but I didn't start racing or anything until I was about 16. "

9.       Do you have BMX riding/racing in your background? "No BMX. Straight into the MTB for me. I do own a BMX now though and enjoy riding it when I get the opportunity."

10.   What's your worst injury? "I have had a few, but breaking my ankle 7 times in a year and a half was the one that hindered my race career the most. I'm glad to have that behind me."

11.   Your words of wisdom to other women and girls getting into the sport? "Don't be put off by anyone who is negative towards you out riding. Just keep doing what you are doing at your own pace. You are just as capable of reaching your own personal goals as anyone else. You will know when YOU are ready to go faster and step up to the next level."

12.   What setbacks have you experienced? "Just the obvious ones that many of the people, especially female riders, encounter: financial setbacks, sponsorship setbacks and of course, injuries."

13.   How has riding evolved for girls since you've been on the scene? How do you see it evolving into the future? "When I first started there were really only one of two chicks that could race on a high level. A few girls occassionally had good results, but in comparision to racing now, it was not nearly as competitive. I would say that now at a World Cup event any of the top 10 ladies has a good chance of winning. We are pushing one another to be faster and we are doing just that! It used to be that I could crash, get up and still finish in the top 10 but a crash now puts any girl out of the top 10!"

14.  Will you be competing in Canada this year? Crankworx? "Not sure yet about Crankworx. It conflicts with European Championships. We'll see. I will be racing the Mont Ste Anne World Cup though which is the place I won my first ever World Cup."

LISBOA, Portugal – The stage was set… thousands of fanatical Portuguese fans crowded the tiny streets of Old Lisboa to watch riders pick their way through narrow alleyways and down steep marble stair cases. The track is like no other! Riders begin inside a castle overlooking Lisboa and race through the streets, over cars, around trams and off drops made from scaffolding before arriving at the finish about 100m from the sea. People flock from all around town to watch the massive TV at the bottom which is broadcasting the live Extreme Television coverage of the event. The Red Bull VIP area is crowded with the likes of the UCI President and F1 driver Rubens Barrichello who both came out to cheers on riders.

Fionn was tearing the course up all day in her usual style. Her first run out she jumped every obstacle on course and left the rest of the women’s field behind trying to get their heads around the daunting track. “I just wanted to get out their and hit everything first run so that I didn’t psyche myself out too much over the jumps.” Fionn said. “The car jump at the top was much better this year and quite easy to clear. I was a bit nervous about the new stair jump towards the finish though, so I just tried not to think about it and hit it straight away. I know a lot of the girls spent most of the practice eyeing up that jump.”

Qualifying came quickly. After only 4 practice runs riders were shuttled to the top to battle it out for a place in the finals. 10 women and 25 men would go through. Fionn used her experience here and took a steady one, knowing how difficult a race run can be on this course. Helen Gaskell qualified fastest in the women’s with Fionn only a few seconds back in 4th. Racing was looking good. Fionn charged into her run and was on course for a fast time when she had an unlucky front wheel drift that ended in a crash down the stairs. “I’m not sure what happened really,” Fionn recalls. “My front wheel was drifting a bit and I knew I was going to have to work to get it back, but then it just stopped dead and I went over the bars and dove straight down the next staircase! I think I may have hit the cameraman!! I lost loads of time getting back up the marble with my SPD’s, but I pulled it back together and made up enough time on the rest of the track to keep a top 5 placing. I am gutted though. Not the win I was hoping for.”

Sabrina Jonnier took the women’s event followed closely by Tracy Hannah, Helen Gaskell, Jill Kintner and Fionn herself to wrap up the top 5.

<Better late than never!  Here's Fionn Griffiths 2x World Championships DH Silver Medallist live from Lisboa, Portugal which she sent to mtb.colonies.com on Friday, May 18 - sorry for the delay guys...I was out riding and didn't get a chance to check my email until this morning. Pics & interview to follow.>

Finally....we made it! After a bit of a hectic drive down the coast Lee, Jill and myself finally arrived in Lisboa. Some of the Portugese are CRAZY drivers and I am surprised we are still alive! And if the driving didn't kill us, the hours we spent lost almost did. I guess that's what we get for using a 5 year old map! However, the Hotel all the athletes/teams are in (Lagoas Park) is beautiful and the weather is a sweltering 32 degrees so we can't complain.

Today was a relatively quiet day. Early morning breakfast followed by a trip to the local jetwash to clean the last of Vigo off our gear and we were back in the hotel pool by lunch!
We did some work throughout the afternoon getting our pits set up downtown Lisboa. It is such a cool city. The new city is busy and full of statues, but the old town (where we race) is really cool. We start the event from a castle at the top of a hill and then race pretty much to the seaside. The buildings are super close together and full of tiny little walkways and stairsets. There are trams that run through a section of the track and a few local cafes and businesses that we pretty much ride through their front doors! The perfect place for a RACE! We always hit up course walking as a group with film crews in toe, and this year was no different. The race organisers took us through the tiny streets and showed us the new car jump and a few other new little twists and turns. I think a few of the new obstacles are going to make for some tight racing! Check out
http://lisboadowntown.sapo.pt/ for some more photos and info.

Tomorrow is race day. 4 practice runs each followed by 1 qualifier. Top
25 men and top 10 women go through. There is a car on the line for the guys (no such luck for the ladies) and one of the Honda Formula 1 guys is going to be there watching the race and doing press conferences during the event. Even the President of the UCI is coming out to watch some racing. Hopefully I can hold it together and finally finish on top of this event. I have raced the Lisboa Downtown for 5 years and have yet to win it, so fingers crossed.

Vail, Colorado - Now in its sixth year, the Mountain Games May 30 - June 3 features 20 different amateur and professional organic action sports competitions
including...

mountain biking...

This year the Teva Mountain Games brings cross-country riders and the new generation of freeriders together for a weekend of great competition.

Vail has a long legacy of hosting world-class cycling competitions dating back to the Coors Classic/Red Zinger races of the early eighties, then as the host site for the World Mountain Biking Championships in '94 and '01.

freeride challenge...

The sport of mountain biking has changed dramatically over past few years as bikes get more and more suspension, and riders continue to push the envelopes of speed and airtime. The Mountain Games has embraced the new freedom of mountain biking and the Freeride Challenge will be the proving ground.

The Freeride Challenge will feature full-on, head-to-head races, but instead of the discipline-specific trials courses of yesteryear, the Freeride Challenge will include difficult but doable jumps, ramps and other obstacles. Riders can choose to enter on a big, DH-style bike, go fast and light on a BMX bike, or ride something in between.

For the spectators, mark this down on the don't-miss events sheet. It's been a crowd favorite over the years with bikers 8 feet in the air, on top of a structure that's only 2 feet wide.

freeride big air competition...

Over the past 5 years mountain biking has undergone a serious transformation. Gone are the days when mountain bikers were known solely for the neon spandex they wore.
Today, freeriders challenge the laws of gravity as they throw 360s and backflips over terrain most wouldn’t even walk down. Check out these world-class riders as they "step it up" on the streets of Vail.

cross country nature valley® mountain bike championship...

New classic course, feed zone, spectator friendly, seperate race times for amateurs and pros, bigger cash purse ($17,000 split between pros and semi pros)...the list goes on and on.

With current and former professional racers working closly with event producers to design this year's race, this is sure to be the most exciting race of the season.

NISSAN ANNOUNCES:
 QASHQAI URBAN CHALLENGE
SERIES 1

First ever pan-European event series in free-riding - five countries, over five weekends, five disciplines

200,000 euros - highest prize money in the sport of mountain biking

First international broadcast of the sport

TRAPPES, France (March 20, 2007) - As part of its European launch of the new ‘urbanproof’ crossover QASHQAI, Nissan announces the QASHQAI Urban Challenge - the first ever pan-European free-riding competition of its kind.

QASHQAI Urban Challenge is an urban free-riding competition where the world's best mountain bikers will compete in an urban environment to win 200,000 euros - the largest prize fund in this sport to date. Throughout May and June, five European cities will host each leg of the first series bringing together the best of the free-riding world as well as the uninitiated in each city where spectators can see the sport pushed to its limits.

The first series of QASHQAI Urban Challenge, which will be broadcast for the first time internationally, will take place in UK, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.  In each country, contestants will encounter different challenges based on the topography of the city and will use different disciplines to overcome these: Dirt, North Shore, Park, Big Air and Street Trials.  All five of the disciplines will be stimulating to watch and relate more to moto-x or trails riding than common perceptions of mountain biking.

Urban free-riding is the most progressive discipline in mountain biking and illustrates the changing trend of focus from open woodland areas into urban city centres.
Nissan is the only non-sport related brand pioneering the ascent of urban free-riding and is looking forward to seeing how the riders respond to the challenge.

“The Urban free-rider epitomises the spirit of our new QASHQAI. They both enjoy the thrill of a challenge and overcoming the everyday obstacles encountered in an urban environment. It’s this joint pleasure of playing with the city that has led Nissan to challenge these professional riders to prove that they are as ‘urbanproof’ as our QASHQAI,” explains Paul Willcox, vice president of marketing at Nissan Europe.

A fully interactive website www.nissan-QASHQAIchallenge.com will provide feature details of the riders, the locations, the disciplines, event schedule and behind-the-scenes updates as the tour progresses.

Event timetable

Newcastle, UK: May 4/5 North Shore
Milan, Italy: May 11/12 Dirt
Madrid, Spain: May 18/19 Street
Cologne, Germany: May 25/26 Park
Paris, France: June 22/23 Big Air

Further details about the QASHQAI Urban Challenge - Series 1 will be announced throughout the lead up to the tour.

 Welcome To The Black Parade
When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band.
He said,
"Son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken,
The beaten and the damned?"
He said
"Will you defeat them, your demons, and all the non believers,
the plans that they have made?" Because one day I leave you, A phantom to lead you in the summer,
To join the black parade." When I was a young boy, My father took me into the city To see a marching band. He said, "Son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken, The beaten and the damned?" Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me. And other times I feel like I should go. Through it all,
the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets. When you're gone we want you all to know We'll Carry on, We'll Carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on Carry on We'll carry on And in my heart I cant contain it The anthem wont explain it. And we will send you reeling from decimated dreams Your misery and hate will kill us all So paint it black and take it back Lets shout it loud and clear Do you fight it to the end We hear the call to To carry on We'll carry on Though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on And though you're broken and defeated You're weary
widow marches on And on we carry through the fears Ooh oh ohhhh Disappointed faces of your peers Ooh oh ohhhh
Take a look at me cause I could not care at all Do or die You'll never make me Cause the world, will never take my heart You can try, you'll never break me Want it all, I'm gonna play this part Wont explain or say i'm sorry I'm not ashamed, I'm gonna show my scar You're the chair, for all the broken Listen here,
because it's only.. I'm just a man, I'm not a hero Just a boy, who's meant to sing this song Just a man, I'm not a hero I -- don't -- care
Carry on We'll carry on Though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on And though you're broken and defeated You're weary
widow marches on We'll carry on
We'll carry on We'll carry on We'll carry We'll carry on

[Part 1: The death of St. Jimmy]

My heart is beating from me
I am standing all alone
Please call me only if you are coming home
Waste another year flies by
Waste a night or two
You taught me how to live
In the streets of shame
Where you've lost your dreams in the rain
There's no signs of hope
The stems and seeds of the last of the dope
There's a glow of light
The St. Jimmy is the spark in the night
Bearing gifts and trust
The fixture in the city of lust
What the hell's your name?
What's your pleasure and whats your pain?
Do you dream to much?
Do you think what you need is a crutch?
In the crowd of pain. St. Jimmy comes without any shame
He says “we're f*cked up”
But we're not the same
And mom and dad are the ones you can blame

Jimmy died today

He blew his brains out into the bay
In the state of mind it's my own private suicide

[Part 2: East 12th St.]

Well nobody cares
Well nobody cares
Does anyone care if nobody cares?
[x2]

Jesus filling out paperwork now
At the facility on east 12th st.
He's not listening to a word now
He's in his own world
And he's daydreaming

He'd rather be doing something else now,
Like cigarettes and coffee with the underbelly,
His life's on the line with anxiety now,
And she had enough,
And he had plenty

Somebody get me out of here
Anybody get me out of here
Somebody get me out of here
Get me the f*ck right out of here

So far away
I don't want to stay
Get me out of here right now
I just wanna be free
Is there a possibility?
Get me out of here right now
This life like dream ain't for me

[Part 3: Nobody likes you!]

I fell asleep while watching spike TV
After 10 cups of coffee
And you're still not here
Dreaming of a song
But something went wrong
But I can't tell anyone
'Cause no one's here
Left me here alone
And I should have stayed home
After 10 cups of coffee I'm thinking
(where'd you go?)
Nobody likes you, everyone left you
(where'd you go?)
They're all out without you havin' fun
(where'd you go?)
Everyone left you, nobody likes you
(where'd you go?)
They're all out without you havin' fun
(where'd you go..go..go..go..)

Geeze...Ha..

[Part 4: Rock and roll girlfriend]
[written and sung by Tre Cool]

I got a rock and roll band
I got a rock and roll life
I got a rock and roll girlfriend
And another ex-wife
I got a rock and roll house
I got a rock and roll car
I play the shi*t out the drums
And I can play the guitar
I got a kid in New York
I got a kid in the bay
I haven't drank or smoked nothin'
In over 22 days
So get off my case
Off of my case
Off of my case!

[Part 5: We're coming home again]

Here they come marching down the street
Like a desperation murmur of a heart beat
Coming back from the edge of town
Underneath their feet
The time has come and it going nowhere
Nobody ever said that life was fair now
Go-carts and guns are treasures they will bear
In the summer heat
The world is spinning
Around and around
Out of control again
From the 7-11 to the fear of breaking down
To send my love a letterbomb
And visit me in hell
We're the ones going

Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again

I started f*ckin' running
As soon as my feet touched the ground
We're back in the Barrio
But to you and me, that's jingle town

Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again
Home
We're coming home again

Nobody likes you
Everyone left you
They're all out without you havin' fun

"Basic Thugonomics"
by: John Cena

So, you think you're untouchable?

[Chorus (scratched) x2:]
Word life--this is Basic Thugonomics
Word life--I'm untouchable but I'm forcin' you to feel me

Whether fightin' or spittin' my discipline is unforgiven
Got you backin' up in a defensive position
An ass-kcikin' anthem, heavyweight or bantam
Holdin' camps for ransom, the microphone phantom
Teams hit the floor this the new fight joint
Like a broken needle kid you missin' the point
We dominate your conference with offense, that's no nonsense
My theme song hits, get you reinforcements
We strike quick with hard kicks, duckin' night sticks
Bare-knuckled men through fight pits, beat you lifeless
Never survive this, you forgot like Alzhmiers
Two-face rappers walk away with four shiners
The raw rhymer, turnin' legends to old-timers
My incisors like a vipor bitin' through your one-liners
New DeadMan Inc., and we about to make you famous
Takin' over Earth and still kickin' in Uranus

[Chorus]

You ain't advanced enough to process, potential for medical concepts
Some objects are foreign, like Loch Ness
Arts and sex are complex regardless of your finesse or fitness is the condition of business
Your lame vision of a underground physical image
You're underneath to undermine your whole typical image
With the precision of percentages and the collision of sentences
Poetry beats your mics
We untouchable like righteous sluts with no crevasses
Streets unite, we rock righter with dumber beats
You cats couldn't come this hot ? in the summer heat
Forget two takes--kill your birds the first time
You better stay worthy of my filler of worse rhymes
I'm better than nice, check the veterans twice
You be beside your self with fear
I'll kill you and bury you twice despite the cover of night
Trackin' ya flight like guerrilla warfare
When the grass is dense
Approaching me is a quick way to get referred to in the past tense
Dead-da, when the lights, the mic is on
The crowd is dead like intermission and you on the Titan Tron

This is the city of the dead
Another life holds a dreary end
We hope, we try, we live, survive
Counting days, trying to get by
Waiting for the calling
Anticipation in the air
We only dream of difference
City sleeping, unaware

Break the silence, wake the dead
Running through these streets alone
(I can't get sleep, let's break this hole)?
Cus' I swear, and this was rather useless
I promise you, we've come this far
And I'm not stopping, I'm not stopping now
I'm not hiding in shadows
Wake up
Send out this message

You said, you said, you said
this time was gonna be different
wake up the dead
[2x]

Dorwning alive, something stirs inside
This isn't over yet
Shake off the dirt
Swallow regret
Stop living under the weight
Living under the weight of regret
Your regrets
Don't lose hope...
Your regrets
Don't lose hope...
Don't let it happen to you
Don't lose hope...
Which side are you gonna choose?
Cause I believe, I believe in seeing you RISE!

We said, we said, we said
This time was gonna be different
Wake up the dead
[4x]

My Journal: ramblings....
By: kendrat

I started to write this so many times, but stopped because I couldn’t find the right words. Not that there are any “right” words, but I like to think before I write. Lord knows the thinking has issues with happening before speaking, so the least I can do is use my brain to write.

My grandmother died a week ago today. Hers was the first death I’ve experienced in the family, and while there has to be a first for everything, I’d hoped this one could’ve held off indefinitely. Of course, I wasn’t THAT naïve, but a girl can hope. Unfortunately, when death calls, he doesn’t take a rain check (well, unless you’re Peter on Family Guy… then you get into all sorts of shenanigans with death). My Gramma died less than two weeks before her 89th birthday, and four short days shy of Christmas.
She loved Christmas. For as long as I can remember, my Gramma would come to our house on Christmas Eve for supper, and then spend the night. She would always sleep in the small bedroom, which meant that whichever of us kids claimed that bedroom at the time was displaced (Eryn had it until she was seven; I gave the big room to her for her seventh birthday, and lived in the small room from then on. Perhaps that’s why I never grew?). As a result, my sister and I had a sleepover on Christmas Eve every year. Putting two excited children in bed together to wait for Santa probably wasn’t the most conducive to a good night’s rest, but it sure was fun. Even if I did have to put up with Eryn’s smelly feet in my face all night. Christmas day we’d wake up (early of course), and Gramma would already be up waiting for us so we could all open our stockings together (she crocheted Christmas stockings for us all with our names across the top. This year while laying them out I put hers out as well out of habit, only to have to fold it up and put it away again).
Then she was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and moved into a nursing home. The sleepovers stopped, Gramma would just come for Christmas Eve dinner and we’d open gifts with her that evening. As the disease progressed, she became more and more confused. Taking her out of the home, even for a brief Christmas dinner, became out of the question. The first year she was unable to come to dinner, it felt like there was something huge missing from the holidays, even though we still went to see her and had a small celebration in the nursing home with her. This year, the early Christmas party was to be on Saturday. It never happened.

I want to share some memories of her, because so many people never got to see her as I did. Alzheimers causes people’s entire personalities to change, and as the disease eats away more and more of their brains, the confusion and the forgetfulness make it difficult for them to remember how or what they were. In the early stages, the patient often experiences a complete 180, and is paranoid and angry where they were once happy and cheerful. As my Gramma moved down that path, she accused family friends left right and centre of trying to mug her, simply because they were trying to help her cross the street and she couldn’t remember who they were. In the nursing home, she would often complain of hating it there and wanting to go “home”, triggered by seeing a familiar family face and knowing it didn’t belong in her surroundings, therefore she must not belong either. A friend of mine who worked with my Gramma would tell her that “Kendra says you can have a sleepover here with me tonight!” whenever this came up, and surprisingly, it worked. My Gramma would return to her normal happy self and enjoy the rest of her day.

When I first learned how to use a telephone, my Gramma was the first person I called. She was always there for us, to lend a hand, give a few words of encouragement, remind us to share, or break up a fight. In kindergarten, she would come pick me up from school, and we would go out for fudgsickles at the local corner store. We’d take our treats back to her house and have fun until my dad came to pick me up. I remember one day coming out of class, I fell down and startled myself. Before I could start to cry, the principal picked me up and put me on his shoulders. I have a vivid recollection of looking down at my Gramma from my perch, and her laughing up at me asking how the weather was up there. She had a great sense of humour, always teasing and making light of things. I’m happy that sense of humour stuck with her throughout her life; even in her final days she was still teasing the nursing staff. For the last few years, she’d been teasing me about boys, telling me not to rush into anything and to take my men for a test run before I married any of them. In return, I asked her if any of the men on her floor had caught her eye, to which she replied with a laugh “What would they want with an old woman like me?! Besides, they’re all too old for me!”.

My Gramma was the one to introduce me to makeup. When she thought the time was right, she took me down to the local Shoppers Drug Mart, loaded up the basket of her walker with all manner of cosmetics, and sent them home with me and my sister. She was always very generous; if she knew there was something we liked, next time we went to visit her she’d have a whole stockpile of it. When her vision got too bad for her to continue driving, she gave her car to my cousin who had just got his license. During high school, my Gramma would let me spend the night with her if I wanted to go out with my friends, or even if I just plain didn’t want to go home. I would cook dinner and dessert for her and she’d let me pick what show I wanted to watch on TV. We’d talk about school and music, and I’d do my homework while she watched Jeopardy and crocheted.

I learned to crochet from my dad, who learned from Gramma. She was a master of the craft; she could make anything from basic potholders to intricate lace. My uncle swears he once saw her crocheting in her sleep, and I quite believe him. She was truly an artist. Her hands were always soft and smooth, and every time I went to visit her in the nursing home, she’d hold my hands in one or both of hers. I remember how her wedding ring looked way too big for her finger, but she never once took it off, even though her husband predeceased her by 44 years. For half her life, she remained true to his memory. There’s a lot to be said for loyalty like that. Family was everything to her.

After she gave away her car, my Gramma walked everywhere. She occasionally took the bus or a cab if the weather was terrible, but she thought nothing of walking two hours to the mall to go shopping, or an hour to the grocery store to stock up on our favourite goodies. One day after a trip to the mall, she invited me over for dinner. I showed up and she immediately got a conspiratorial look on her face. She showed me her new purchases, which included not only a new bra, but some realistic looking implants for said bra! She said she was tired of having two shapeless flaps of skin and wanted to feel like a woman again.

These are just a few memories I want to share. There are so many more, but it would take years to write them all. My Gramma was always so proud of me for going to university, working for the government, playing silly songs on the piano… everything. The funeral service was yesterday, and it was nice to see the small crowd that came. The service was traditionally Catholic, and the priest was an old family friend who came out of retirement specially for my Gramma. I hope she knew how many people she touched, and how much she will be missed.

For those of you who stayed with my ramblings this long, thank you.

BOYKO JOINS NORCO FACTORY TEAM
November 24th, 2006 ~
Norco Performance Bikes is excited to announce the
addition of Ben Boyko to our Factory Team for the '07/08 season.
The newest member of the Norco Factory Team
is currently one of the hottest riders in the
freeride/slopestyle scene. This past season, Ben
captured top 5 finishes at key slopestyle
competitions including: Crankworx (Whistler, BC),
Bike Magazine's Monster Park, and the Braun
26Trix (Austria).

Just in case competitions around the globe didn't
keep him busy enough, Ben also spent much of
last season building and riding for a variety of films.
His most recent work includes feature segments
in: CKD Bits 3, Kranked 6: Progression, and Run
For Your Life 3.

Before he appeared on the mountain biking scene in 2003, Ben spent many years
honing his skills on a BMX. He started riding when he was 13 and, shortly after,
began entering dirt jump and street competitions. When a friend introduced him
to the world of mountain bikes, Ben had so much fun, he decided to spend more
time riding 26". It was a move that has paid off.

Despite his success as a mountain biker, Ben has not abandoned his BMX roots.
This season, if his schedule allows, Ben plans to enter the Vancouver Metro-Jam,
in addition to all the major slopestyle events.

Norco is excited to welcome another professional and diversely talented athlete
to our Team roster for the upcoming season!

In addition to working with Norco and Norco Factory Team sponsors such as:
Marzocchi, Denny's, Kenda, and Jagwire, Ben will also be riding for FSA, Dakine,
Sombrio, and Mavic. For more information about Ben and other members of the
Norco team, check out: team.norco.com
