last week i got back from farnham glacier
for those not in the know
(which i essentially was not until i got a sudden call)
farnham is an elite training centre for alpine athlete
it's a glacier
and for anyone who's been to whistler and/ or hood
elite really means no distractions
in fact after you have been there for a week
you may forget what the inside of a bar looks like
but it brings up questions for those of us
who are helping to make future olympians
is snowboarding
and snowboarders
in Canada, ready for it?
It's not just something to be good at anymore
it's something that you train at, focus on
live for
but not in the same way that most people live for it....

This past weekend the resort I work at hosted a big air/slope style, dance monkey dance, competition. So i stood there with a beverage in hand (ok it was a hot chocolate cause I was working, but  in my brain i was imagining it was a can of Vitamin K [kokanee]). Watchin guys, and the odd girl huck their meat. Wishing it was me. Not cause I wish I was that good. But because at one point in my life I was that good. Or at least I was good enough to stand at the top and attempt to get there. Though in all likely hood, some one some where would say the jump was probably smaller, or the weather was better, or some thing.
But here's the thing, I really miss competing. The showing up early at the hill, the seeing people you haven't seen since the last time you competed, the wondering who would win, the dread of seeing that one person who is always soooooo much better than the rest, the oversized t-shirt given out to all competitors, the thrill of wondering if you won (freestyle) or even knowing (bx or race), waiting to see how you placed if you weren't in the top three, the door prize draws at the end, the hangin out, the racing down to the bottom, going for sushi (this is mandatory after snowboard competing, my rugby friends don't get it but it sure makes me feel good after), heading to the after party......dragging my a-- up the next morning to go to work/the hill/breakfast
it is all such a life style, and for sure I miss it
but hey, my life isn't so bad now either, lol and being 32 and competing with 21 year olds, is well like going to the bar with 21 year olds (which can be fun but I am not doing it every friday!)
